What’s On around Macedonia -January

January holds a lot of interesting happenings related to Macedonian culture and tradition.

On the 13th of January, Vevchani will be the center of attention. The famous 1.400 years old Carnival will take place in this small village, located 4 km North-West of the town of Struga.The Carnival is an interesting mix of paganism and modernism. There are three traditional masks: bridegroom and bride, August the Fool and musicians. The entire Vevchani gets a new look becoming a great theater during the cold month of January where people disguise themselves to mark everyday events and mock the authorities and the power they represent with a great deal of humor and sarcasm. The Carnival ends on 14th January, the beginning of the New Year according to the old Julian calendar, later replaced by the modern Gregorian calendar.

What’s around Macedonia October

From the 1st to 5th of October, Skopje will be the center of the cultural happenings. “Ora bez Granici” (Dances without borders) is an internacional festival of national dances. For this event, dancing groups from all over the world will visit Skopje to share culture through dance, costumes, and songs that are typical from their home country. the festival will take place on the Square “Makedonija”. The citizens of our capital, for 5 days, will be able to enjoy the dances and taste the difference between the many nations of the world.
