The Macedonia Triumphal Arch

arch-01_0The Macedonia Triumphal Arch, which is part of the Skopje 2014 Project, is located on Pella Square in Skopje, Macedonia. The arch was officially opened on 8 September 2011 on the 20th anniversary of Macedonia’s independence.

Twenty one meters high, the arch is covered in reliefs describing Macedonian history and culture on a surface of 193 square meters. The interior houses a multi-level gallery suitable for exhibitions and other cultural events. On top is an observation platform overlooking Macedonia Square.

In order for the reliefs to obtain their final appearance, they were first molded in clay, then computers were used to  shape gypsum molds. The marble was rough cut by machine, then finally worked by hand to produce the finished work.

archThe Triumphal Arch was created by Valentina Stevanovska, who also designed the Warrior on Horseback Fountain in Macedonia Square. Construction was carried out by Granit Construction at a cost of 4.4 million Euros.

The Macedonia Triumphal Arch stands as a symbol of Macedonian independence and frames a grand vista as one gazes through it towards Macedonia Square and the Warrior on Horseback Fountain. This view is sure to be the stuff of postcards for years to come.
