At one past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau will have already been shipped to all parts of the world, ready for just this moment when the first glasses will be raised: “The New Beaujolais has arrived!” And the festivity begins.
This wine is best drunk young and due to the way it is made, the astringent tannins, which are normally found in red wines, are absent, making it an easy to drink, fruity wine, enjoyed in high spirits rather than criticized. Half the fun comes from the fact that on the same night, in homes, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and bars around the world, the same celebration is taking place.
Years ago the official release date was set for November 15th. What began as a local tradition gained such popularity that the news of it reached Paris. Not long afterwards the news spread outside the borders of France and around the world. The date changed again in 1985 to the third Thursday of November, tying it to a weekend, thus making the celebration complete. But wherever the new Beaujolais went, there was a mutual agreement among the importers not to sell the Beaujolais before midnight on the third Thursday of November.
This celebration, thanks to Georges Duboeuf, is a triumph of marketing and promotion. In total, in the last 45 years, sales have risen from around a million bottles to more than 70 million bottles annually.
Bearing the long festive tradition in mind, the French Center of Culture in Macedonia is once again a patron of the Beaujolais Nouveau event after several years break. The event will take place in the New Vero Center on the 19 November starting at 1 p.m. At this year’s ceremony there will be four members of the Bavarian “Compagnons,” who will be dressed in uniform to mark the occasion. The honoring of the Bavarian rank will be followed by troubadour music and other entertainment. The compagnons will enter to musical accompaniment.
The Beaujolais celebration is organized by the French Center of Culture in Macedonia in cooperation with the Vero Center and the Ideal Shipka Dairy which will provide cheese to go along with the wine.
All wine lovers are welcome to join the celebration! Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!
