Situated in one of the most attractive parts of Skopje, the pedestrian quay overlooking the Vardar River near the Holiday Inn hotel, the first authentic Irish Pub in Macedonia offers a warm Irish welcome. Since 2000, its wood paneled interior and typical beverage list has been providing a small corner of Ireland in Skopje to locals and expats alike. It is no wonder then, that this pub is well known among foreigners and a useful landmark for meeting friends. At the very least, even those who are “just a little bit” Irish need a place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
We were there for a relaxing evening. Usually visiting a pub means ordering beer and making toasts. At St. Patrick’s, you have your pick of either draft or bottled, domestic or foreign beer. Most people go for Skopsko or Guinness accompanied by the ubiquitous peanuts that so often show up in front of you when seated at a bar.
The menu offers standard Irish favorites as well as a wide range of dishes including common Macedonian salads, meat, fish, seafood dishes, pastas, soups and assorted desserts.
In typical form, we decided on an eclectic assortment of food. first up was a savory chicken burger, which, coupled with french fries, was tasty and big enough for a meal on its own. We also tried tortilla with mushroom and vegetables. The tortilla, prepared Mexican style, had a spicy, appetizing taste. Finally, for our last choice we tried the Spanish paella, which was so good as to make this paella lover’s heart jump. It was a delicious mixture of aroma and flavors with enough on the plate to satisfy two.
Our stomachs did not allow for a dessert course, but nevertheless, if you have a sweet tooth, the choice of cakes will make your mouth water.
The Irish Pub offers live music often on weekend evenings, so plan accordingly. This pub is an ideal place to share a relaxing time with friends, good music and — why not — a pint of beer (or two.)
