Saint Pantelejmon Restaurant, which is located in the very heart of Mount Vodno, offers visitors a special combination of peaceful air and natural beauty. Right next to the restaurant, there is a church which bears the same name and adds a spiritual dimension to the place that has persisted for centuries. The church and restaurant share a spacious yard which on sunny days offers a lovely panoramic view of Skopje below.
Entering the restaurant is like stepping into a history museum. The decoration highlights Macedonian culture, including traditional clothing, pictures of local scenes, and other historically interesting artifacts including a stuffed bear. A string of dry red peppers, a common sight in every village house in years past, hangs on the wall as a reminder of Macedonian cuisine. In the right corner of the restaurant there is an authentic fireside which creates a homey atmosphere for guests to enjoy.
We started our meal with wine accompanied by soft traditional Macedonian music and pleasant conversation. We highly recommend the mulled wine in winter, which is a sweet way to combat cold weather. The Macedonian salad was fresh and more than satisfactory.
The menu includes many fine meat dishes, and we were particularly drawn to the specialty of the house, a mixture of chicken and pork meat with cheese, vegetables and seasoning. The Vardar Pot is another fine choice, made of pork and vegetables baked in an earthenware pot. Stuffed green peppers with cheese are a lighter choice and also delicious.
The dessert menu offers all of the usual sweets. In addition, the pears in wine sauce are particularly promising and exotic.
In warm weather, visitors can eat outdoors, surrounded by fresh air, mountainous pastures and a breath-taking view. While there, be sure to stop in at the 12th century Byzantine church St. Pantelejmon.
