The first Ohrid Summer Festival opened with a gala concert by Macedonian opera prima donna Ana Lipsa Tofovoc on 4 August 1961. From that time up to today, the organizers have continually striven for the highest quality entertainment experiences possible.
The Festival traditionally begins on 12 July and closes on 20 August every year. It has the full support of all of the relevant state institutions, especially the Ministry of Culture. The President of the Republic of Macedonia is the Patron of the Festival. Financial support is provided by many firms and organizations from around the country.
The Festival has been a member of the European Festival Association since 1994. Over the course of its history, many national and international artists and ensembles have performed at the festival. Some of the most prominent have been Zubin Mehta, Jose Carreras, Ennio Moricone, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jessye Norman, Victoria de Los Angeles, Gideon Kremer, Maxim Wengerov, Vadim Repin, Julian Rachlin, Henryk Szeryng, Elena Obrascova, and Katia Ricciarelli. Each year brings a new selection of stars who entertain the crowds in Ohrid.
In 2000 and 2001, the Ancient Theatre was established as the main stage for the Festival. Through the addition of this venue, the Festival has developed new, richer dimensions in programming excellence, especially for gala evenings.
On welcoming the 50th edition of the Festival, Ohrid Summer will again press forward in its mission to spark new creative energy into the European, and indeed world, cultural scene.
