Wimpy must have been a Macedonian. Among the many superstitions that have been observed in Macedonian society, one that is still deeply ingrained among the people is not paying bills on Monday.
Widespread belief is that if you pay a bill on Monday, the first working day of the week, you will wind up paying unexpected bills all week long. This is a frightening prospect for many Macedonians given the general poverty and high unemployment around the country. So, even though most Macedonians are sufficiently well educated to understand the irrational nature of the superstition, many continue to abide by the principle. Just in case.
If you sit down to a rational conversation with a Macedonian on the subject, they will likely agree with you that there is nothing to it, but to be culturally sensitive, and save your friends embarrassment, please avoid collecting debts on Mondays.
