The 7th annual Asterfest international film festival is on in Strumica from 27-31 May. The motto this year is “Strumica, Openness, Creation.” The programme includes over 50 films from 20 different countries, including submissions from throughout Europe and from as far away as Australia and the USA. The films are divided into seven different categories. Activities will take place in multiple venues around town, involving the whole city in the festival.
The festival motto is a nod toward the creative aspirations of Strumica as an open, modern city welcoming new and exciting cinematic developments from around the world. The films are presented in seven different categories: Asterdoks ( creative documentaries), Global fiction (short films), Movieland (film shorts), One woman/One Film, Merry-Diones, and Homage (foreign films).
The opening ceremony will be held on 27 May in the Great Hall of the Anton Panov Cultural Center. The programme includes opening remarks, speeches, and three special awards. Latvian director and screen writer Laila Pakolnina, English actor and director Timothy Byford and Macedonia’s own actor Salaetin Bilal will be honored. Screenings start immediately following the opening ceremony with the Macedonian premiere of Flame by Tomislav Aleksov, the award winning animated short You’re Out, by Austrian Max Liebich, and the Finnish documentary film Goring’s Baton by Pia Andell.
