The Memorial House of Mother Teresa is a tribute to one of the great personalities of the twentieth century. Mother Teresa, founder and leader of the Missionaries of Charity Roman Catholic order, was born in Skopje and raised in this neighborhood. The Memorial House is located on Macedonia Street, in the very centre of Skopje, close to her birthplace, on the former site of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where Mother Teresa began her spiritual journey. It stands there as a reminder of the brave, humble woman committed to sharing God’s love with the poorest of the poor.
The Memorial House is a modern building designed in the style of old Skopje, much like Mother Teresa’s birth house. The outer façade is a pattern of blue and white doves, a fitting symbol for Mother Teresa, who lived a life of peace. The blue and white colors are reminiscent of the blue and white colors of the Missionaries of Charity.
A spiral staircase leads to one big room housing artifacts of Mother Teresa. Black and white photographs of her parents as well as photographs of her meetings with presidents, the pope, and other important people line the walls.
There is the old iron bed which gave her rest at an early age, the old wooden table with chairs, on which her meals were served, and some old woolen woven blankets, typical coverings in Macedonia in those days. There are other objects of hers as well, such as letters, books in different languages, and poems. A simple blue and white habit rests under glass. This place demonstrates the peaceful simplicity of her faith and character.
Another set of outside stairs leads us to the chapel on the top floor of the house. It is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays for religious services but visitors can always peek through the glass to see its modern furnishings.
There is a small souvenir shop on the ground floor.
An oversized statue of Mother Teresa stand nearby. Other statues grace the garden and courtyard of the house.
As the sun embraces this lovely Memorial House, it beckons to curious passersby, whispering to them Mother Teresa’s message of peace and love toward everyone.
