Every country has its own idiosyncrasies, and Macedonia is no exception. When it comes to towel etiquette, Macedonians are very conscious of hygiene. You ought to pay special attention to this when you stay in a hotel, visit a Macedonian family, or welcome guests to your own home.
Following a few simple rules will demonstrate your cultural sensitivity:
(1) Macedonians use separate towels for face and body, so always be sure to lay out two for each guest.
(2) Do not put a towel on the floor until you are ready to put it in the laundry. Once a towel touches the floor, the typical Macedonian will consider it dirty and not use it again until after it has been washed.
(3) Do not step on towels normally used for drying your face or body. Macedonians ordinarily use a carpet or a bathroom mat for their floor rather than a towel. If a Macedonian sees you stepping on a towel, they will begin to think of it as a floor mat only, and most likely they will be uncomfortable using it as a towel in the future.
(4) Treat hotel towels with the same respect you would extend inside a private home. Some hotels are known to charge extra fees to guests who misuse towels. Do not use your towel as a floor mat unless you are ready to pay for it!
Mind these simple rules to earn the “towel lover” seal of approval!
