Mavrovo

MavrovoMavrovo is a region in the north-west of Macedonia. It is one of the most beautiful places of our country as well as the most visited ones. The whole region consists of several villages : Mavrovo, Mavrovi Anovi, Leunovo and Nikiforovo. It is home to a national park and an artificial lake.
The exquisite location and nature of the mountain Bistra made this region grow into a big tourist center. In less than 100 km distance from Skopje (the capital of Macedonia) you can get to this region fairly easily.
In the winter season  Mavroro offers an excellent ski center named “Zare Lazarevski.”  It has two ski-lifts, one ski-lift with over 1,000 person capacity per hour. The ski trails start at 1,960 m and end at 1,250 m above sea level. The ski center has recently been renovated. It is the most popular ski destination in Macedonia since it is a great place to spend your winter vacation. Accommodation is richly provided for, both in hotels and private apartments.

During the summer, you can spend time on Mavrovo Lake, which is excellent for swimming, sailing and fishing. It is 12 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide and 48 meters deep. This artificial lake was made in 1953. Interestingly enough, there is  a half-submerged church in the middle.                                                                                                   mavrovomnt

The National Park consists of the highest mountain peaks in Macedonia joined in a mountain range: Shar, Korab and Bistra (Golem Korab is the highest peak in the country with its 9,100 feet). These mountains offer a magnificent landscape. Between them is the most beautiful canyon, The Radika Gorge, which is more than 15 miles long and is rich in various types of flora and fauna.
