Pivnica An, which means “tavern”, is a real refreshment for anyone looking for a traditional Macedonian atmosphere. Soft Macedonian music plays in the background while you dine amidst decorations and details that take you back a century in time. The restaurant is part of the historical object built in 1472.
The restaurant itself is situated in the somewhat forgotten old Turkish bazaar. You can find Pivnica An, hidden near a fountain and a big oriental plane tree (which we call “chinar”) on the street Gradishte. When you reach the fountain you will face an old stone wall with an opening whose stairs lead you directly to the yard of the tavern.
The menu offers both international and traditional Macedonian foods such as, muchkalica, which is a pork in tomato sauce, country meat made of pork and mushrooms in sauce, pasha meatballs prepared with mixed meat and sauce with rice and onion), then our famous “sarma” or cabbage and vine leaf rolls stuffed with rice and minced meat, musaka, turli tava, and others. The price of these varies from 2.5 to 9 Euros per meal.
There is a variety of salads offered on the menu, but if you are a group of several people, we can warmly recommend the traditional
Macedonian d’oeuvres, which consists of the famous Macedonian ajvar or also known as pepper caviar, malidzano (made of peppers and eggplants), urnebes salad, cream cheese, lettuce, fried zucchini, and smoked ham. The plate is huge and it will suffice for several people. The rate is about 7.5 Euros.
If you are fond of meat, we would like to recommend the chicken
steak, which is offered in three variants: with yellow cheese, with white sauce and mushrooms, and the third is with curry sauce. You cannot go wrong with any of these. It ranges in cost from 3.5 to 4 Euros per dish.
Another specialty that you can try here is the Ohrid lake trout, a special and highly delicious fish found only in Ohrid Lake and therefore is unique. There are other sea food dishes that “Pivnica An” offers too. Among them you can opt for some sea fish and a fillet of salmon. The rate of these is not surprisingly higher, from about 20 to 30 Euros per dish.
If you would still like a dessert after the abundant choice in salty food, you can try the “sweet baklava,” a Turkish old-time favorite, with a lot of syrup made of sugar and lemon. There are also some pancakes and ice-cream for those who would opt for our more well known desserts.
The list of beverages is supplied with different kinds of wine, beer, juice, sodas, coffee, and liquor. The price is reasonable and similar to those of the other taverns.
